Webb
Simpson Golf Swing and Putting Tips

Webb
Simpson is excited to get on the course at Merion
and attempt to become the 1st golfer to win back to back
US Opens
since Curtis Strange accomplished the
feat in '88-'89. This year's scoring will be a lot lower
than last year when Webb won in San Francisco with a total
of +1 for the week.
Webb
Simpson has a golf swing with some idiosyncrasies. He gets
into a few positions on the back swing and down swing that
work
well
for him, but could be a bit tricky for the rest of us. He's
a lean and limber 27 year old and his swing reflects that
fact.
When
you look at his long game numbers, he is actually quite unspectacular.
This is quite fascinating considering he won 3 times
in a 12 month span and had a boat load of top 10 finishes
in 2012, and 4 to date in 2013 including a playoff loss at
the Heritage. This
proves there is more than 1 way to get the job done.
Some
quick stats. Webb is not overly long or accurate with the
driver. He is ranked 121 out of 185 players and 90 of 185
in distance and accuracy respectively. Though he did hit
a 398 yard drive this year. Wow!
Now
as we get closer to the green, we can see where
Simpson starts to excel. He hits 67.3% of the greens in regulation.
So he has a solid fairway wood/hybrid and iron game.
Plus
when
he does get in trouble in the rough, Webb can get out
and get on the green. This shows his head is in the game
too. He proved this at the U.S. Open last year, making smart
decisions for 4 rounds.
If
you are in trouble, your first goal should be to Get
Out Of Trouble. The most glaring disregard for
this golden rule conjures up images of Phil Mickelson at
the 2006
U.S. Open at Winged Foot, where an errant tee shot resulted
in an epic collapse and another heart wrenching, 2nd place
finish.
The
Putting Game...
Now,
when it comes to putting, Webb is in an elite class. This
guy can get the ball in the hole. He was ranked 1st
in Birdie Average in 2012, and is among the
leaders in 2013. He is also makes a ton of eagles and
sinks a
lot of birdie putts on par 3's.
This means his iron tee shots find the green and he drains
the
putts. That combination will lower your scores in a hurry.
I
met Webb at The Barclay's event. He's
a polite, easy going guy, who is generous with his time.
What
you see
is what you get in person.
He
has had great success with the belly putter, as has fellow
"young gun" Keegan Bradley (a fellow major winner).
I took some shots of Webb working with caddy Paul Tesori
at The Barclay's.
Now
whether
you are using a traditional length putter, or a body anchored
putter like Webb, there is one fundamental you should
adopt.
Or at least incorporate into some practice sessions.
You
will notice with the great putters that there is a relationship
between the forearms and putter grip/shaft.
The
forearms form a straight line down the shaft.
You
may remember from biology class that there
are 2 main bones in the forearms, the radius and ulna. If
you align that putter shaft right between the 2 on both arms,
the shaft is in effect braced or locked in to a solid position
for
putting. In fact, the putter shaft becomes an extension
of the arms!
Now
the golfer has to simply rock the shoulders to achieve a
pendulum like motion. Contact becomes very solid. The ball
will jump off the putter face as there is no slop or wasted
motion. In essence, it is like the putter is welded to the
arms.
This
alignment method also eliminates wrist break or flipping
the putter head through the stroke. Under pressure, this
will help you make more putts.
When
you hear announcers talk about a player "pulling a putt",
that is almost always the
result of an over active trail hand (the right hand for
a RH golfer). That will close the club face and move the
ball
left of the target. The braced position combined with a
pendulum stroke generated from the shoulders will eliminate
the flip.
One
final comment on forearm alignment and the belly putter.
Webb Simpson's putting stats show how
deadly he is from long range with his putting game. In fact
he is near the top of the heap in making the long breakers
(those putts we love to see drop in the hole).
On
putts in the 15-20' range, he is ranked 16th out of 185 so
he buries a lot of those side winders. If you are going to
win on the PGA Tour, you need to make a few bombs on Saturday
and
Sunday
and Webb has a knack for doing just that.
The
longer putters like the belly anchored, and especially
the
chest anchored (used by Ernie Els, Bernhard
Langer, Fred
Couples,
etc...)
allow
the golfer to have a more upright stance which promotes a
more comfortable, pendulum swing. It also provides the golfer
with a higher vantage point from which to survey the green
to pick up the little nuances of the break and speed. If
you were watching
the British Open last year, you saw Els make
some key putts on Sunday which led to his final round 68
and 4th major title.
As
the players adjust to the new putter rules, you will still
see the forearm alignment above with most
great putters, regardless of putter configuration or design.
The guys and gals (past and present) who putt the best like
the putter shaft/grip to be an extension of their forearms
whenever possible.
The
Iron Game...
From
the fairway and even the rough, Webb Simpson can get the
ball on the green. He is an excellent iron player and also
makes good decisions that result in eagle and birdie opportunities.
One
aspect of his swing that can help many golfers actually occurs
before he takes the club back. Many PGA Tour players set-up
with the inside pocket of the elbow pointing more out in
front of them, towards the ball line. Ben Hogan advocated
having the elbows point at the outside of the hip bones,
this would
have the inside elbow pockets pointing more in front, or
even "looking" towards
the hands.
Now
take a look at Webb's left elbow above.
The
inside pocket of the elbow is almost
pointing away from the target!
It
is not pointing out in front of him. The left elbow is also
a bit hyper extended, which is a bit old school, ala Nicklaus
and Miller. I don't advocate the hyperextension, in fact
most players can't even hyperextend that joint. While providing
a nice swing radius, hyperextension or locking the lead
arm tends to cause tension in the down swing which slows
arm speed, release, and ultimately curbs ball speed (i.e
less distance).
Yet
pointing that elbow in the direction Webb does can help many
golfers, especially if one tends to take the club
away outside the target line (where the club head stays outside
the hands too long).
An
elbow that is pointed more away from the target vs. toward
the ball will help a golfer make a straight back takeaway
from the ball. It also helps to "pre-roll" the
lead forward a bit so a player can have a head start in
the back swing.
Don't overdo it though, or you can whip that club around
your body in no time.
Little
adjustments with the elbows can yield very different feels
in the set-up and take away. On the practice range, it
is common to see player's instructors tweaking a golfer's
elbows one way or another. The goal is to always
simplify the
swing and engrain better "feels" for
the player that he or she can repeat under pressure.
Webb
Simpson has found the positions that work under pressure
and he now has his name on a U.S. Open trophy. Quite an accomplishment
for a golfer especially at such an early stage in his career.
All
Tour caliber players like Webb move effortlessly from their
"top of the back swing" position through impact to the
finish
position.
Hence,
the Down Swing has its own Set of Requirements.
I
once marveled at this seemingly magical 1/2 second (from
back swing to finish position) while watching one PGA player
after another strike golf balls while
testing my new
ball designs both on practice ranges at professional
events and at our corporate testing centers.
In
every instance, the best players with repeating golf swings
were able to:
1)
Generate high club head speed which allowed them
maximum distance potential, especially off the driver.
2)
Hit the center of the club face consistently (in
fact, wear it out).
3) Control the club face angle and club head path so their side spin (draw,
fade) was manageable.
During
one of these sessions, I discovered what I call The
Key to a Repeating Golf Swing. It
was the final piece of the puzzle.
After I tied up that loose end, it all fell into place.
I became consistent across all clubs. My swing was now obeying
the laws of physics and I was reaping the rewards.
All
great players, past and present, male and female, are performing The
Key whether they are consciously aware
of it or not.
When The
Key is performed correctly, the down swing will
be on auto pilot. You will be held captive by your own
great swing.
Impact
sounds like a gunshot (especially off the driver) and the
golf ball is compressed as efficiently as possible. You
will use all of your available swing speed with
no power leaks, just like Webb and his fellow
Tour players.
The
down swing forces created are tremendous, even for the
Senior or Slower Swing Speed player. Different
muscles are engaged and dynamic balance must be maintained
by calling on specific parts of the body. And it all takes
place in 1/2 second!
These
requirements are met by every pro, yet very few recreational
golfers (due to no fault of their own).
That's
exactly why I created my blue print for
a true Repeating Golf Swing. A swing that delivers the
ball to mowed grass, not the rough or woods.
If
you are not happy with your game and are looking
for a new direction this 2020 season, I
would like the opportunity to help you by showing you The
Key To A Repeating Golf Swing and
my complete swing technique.
You

working with some of the top players in the game. I am convinced
you will benefit tremendously from my swing instruction,
short game strategy, and expert golf ball recommendations

In
all my years of playing golf, I have concluded that a
golfer cannot break 80 without a repeating golf swing.
It does not have to be perfect, but it must be reproducible.
When a repeating swing takes form, a whole new level of satisfaction
results as the golfer is now able to play the game the way
it was intended.
My
trademark move, The Key, delivers
the club head right back through the ball with precision
power and control. It is the star of the show. I
can't play without it.
In
fact my discovery of The Key was the very catalyst
for my whole career in the golf industry. It was also the
sole factor that..
Took
my scores from the 110's to the 70's after struggling for
years
with inconsistent ball striking and a stagnant handicap.
I'll
show you exactly what I've shown over 10,000 golfers from
61 countries, many of whom broke 80 in their very
next round after putting The Key into use.

Let
me show you exactly how to deliver the club head right
back through the ball at impact with tremendous power and
control. Thousands of golfers, from beginners
to scratch players, have put The Key to
work in their games and the results have been astounding
(over 250 testimonials on file).
In
fact, the following is a note typical of the type that
hit my inbox all week. It is genuine and unsolicited:
"First
ever even par round"
"Hi
Robert,
I
just wanted to pass on that over the last few weeks
I have being playing better and better, until the
peak which was just yesterday.
I
played at a local course and for the first time
in my life I shot under 80, and
not just under. I hit 38, 36. A day of firsts, first
ever even par round, first time in the 70's, 4
birdies, just an all round amazing result.
I
owe a fair bit of it to you as I am adhering strictly
to your teaching.
Thanks again and best regards,
Dale
N. - Maylasia
P.S. I have just received 2 dozen (name
removed) golf balls, the ball you recommended for my
game (although the score yesterday was with a (name
removed), needless to say I'm starting to love this
ball quite a lot) and the next time out I intend to try this
ball. I'll check in with you early in the new year to see if
there is anything else that you recommend."

"your
instruction clears the head"
Robert,
"I
am sure you have received many testimonials in
the past but how many within the first
few hours.
I
purchased & read your e-book this morning -
as usual, after reading I needed to go to the practice
range to see if it at least worked sometimes for
me before committing any further time - patience
is not one of my virtues.
Whilst
I hit the ball well & hit what I was aiming
at most of the time that is not the reason for
this reply.
For
the first time in my 40 years of golf I felt & knew
at the top when I was in a good position to hit
the ball solidly & could predict the outcome
from the top of my swing.
In
short, thank you - I now have the new sensation
of the correct feeling at the top - golf is not
a game of perfect but given 5 minutes practice
I am convinced that "simple" is the
answer for the amateur/social golfer to play good
golf without hitting hundreds of balls per day.
- your instruction clears the head of the thousand
thoughts that ruin scores & a good day out
with the boys.
I
started a skeptic who expected the same rehash
of information, instead I am pleasantly surprised."
