As I write this, 55+ year old Fred Couples is the among the Driving Distance Leaders on the Champions Tour (the 50+ circuit). Fred’s driving distance average is a staggering 295 yards! In order to hit it that far, his driver swing speed is also well above the PGA Tour average of 113 mph.
To put this into further perspective, 295 yards is roughly the average driving distance for PGA Tour players Rickie Fowler, Sergio Garcia, Hunter Mahan, and Charl Schwartzel.
In fact, Couple’s driving distance would rank him 42nd out of 201 golrfers on the regular Tour! This means at over 55 years of age, Fred blows it by 80% of the young guns, including guys less than 1/2 his age.
So if you are over 50 (or even if you aren’t), there is a golf stance positioning principle you need to know about to get every inch of power and distance out of your swing. Fred does it and it is a big reason for Freddy’s prodigious driving distance.
It’s also a simple fundamental that is often misunderstood or over-looked, but it is critical to maximizing your distance whether you swing your driver at 70 mph, 120 mph, or anywhere in between.
Take a look at Fred’s “target” (left) foot. He has that foot turned 40-45 degrees from square (perpendicular to the target line). That foot is darn near pointing towards the target.
That simple foot position helps him on several fronts:
1) It helps him load the right hip in the back swing by preventing over rotation of the hip girdle. The loaded hips are wound like a spring.
2) The turned foot assists the left hip clearing and turning in the down swing. There is no jamming or stressing of the left hip socket, or excessive twisting of the knee.
3) Fred’s effortless, buttery release through impact is also facilitated as his body’s “intent” is towards the target (vs. neutral or arbitrary).
Now there is a lot of instruction these days that favors a square or perpendicular position for that foot; pointing more towards the ball line. The logic is that a turned foot like Fred’s is a “power leak” because the knee can buckle and dissipate power.
Well I’ll lobby for the turned foot all day long. My knee and hip will also opt for this too as I plan on keeping that original equipment as long as possible!
If you have a copy of The Key To A Repeating Golf Swing, reference the ebook (p. 54) or hardcopy (P. 60) and review the text and other images therein regarding foot position and pressure. It’s important to nail this as it works synergistically with the
other components of the swing method and the main principle, The Key.
The above foot position is one important step to a Repeating Golf Swing that can deliver tremendous distance and accuracy even if your swing speed isn’t what it used to be.
