As
I write this, PGA Tour player Mark Wilson is
on the course at the Sony Open in Honolulu looking to add
a
second
Sony
trophy to
his
mantle.
His past
victory at the Waialae Country Club marked
his 3rd of 5 PGA Tour victories in his excellent pro
career.
The
40 year old Wisconsin native turned pro in 1996 and has won
a stunning
14.3 million dollars on Tour. Until his 4th
and 5th victories, he was the type of player that
flew under the radar and was hardly a household name in the sport.
But his peers on Tour were well aware of his talent and grit.
At
5'8" and 145 lbs, Wilson doesn't make his living busting
300+ yard drives and hitting into the greens with pitching wedges
like Bubba Watson and the other long guns. Even so, Mark averaged
a very respectable
280 yards driving average in 2014 and has gained
a few yards in 2015.
Where
he excels is in the accuracy or "precision" numbers.
Mark is typically top 25 in driving accuracy, and top
25 in greens hit in regulation (he hits
76% of the greens from the fairway).
And in 2015, he already has 2 top ten finishes.
When
watching Mark Wilson hit balls, it is immediately apparent he
has a powerful, "body powered" swing. It's interesting
that players that are smaller in stature tend to gravitate to
this type of
swing [legendary Ben Hogan and Jonathon Bird (another 5 time
winner) immediately come to mind].
Yet
this type of swing is great for golfers of all sizes. 6'4" Nick
Faldo won six Majors with this style.
I
also prefer this type of swing as it maximizes golf ball
compression at
impact by reducing what I call "slop" in the
swing. This in turn results in maximum ball speed (ala
more distance) and spin control.
Body
swingers supply the power in the swing through the rotation of
the core (chest, trunk, thighs). The body is essentially the
engine of the swing, and the arms and hands are along for the
ride!
And
here's some great news...
Virtually
every golfer, including yourself, is a body swinger to
some degree with your current motion! You are just not performing
the move as efficiently as Mark and his peers. In your swing,
things are simply out of alignment, sequence, and position, which
causes slop in
the motion.
This results
in a myriad of issues including lack of distance, slices,
hooks, topped shots, shanks, etc... All the frustrations that leave
you with up and down rounds, and a stagnant golf handicap.
So
to
have an efficient swing, one must first start out in a
solid, balanced set-up position where the weight is evenly
distributed between the entire platforms
of the feet. The feet, knees, hips, and shoulders are on
a line parallel
to the target line.
Wilson
does this beautifully and it is a first indication of why he
has a powerful, "slop free" golf swing.
Let's
look at his Golf Swing...
On
the left (1st image below), Mark is at the top of the
backswing and
everything looks great.
But
the next 2 images start to tell the story of why he is
so powerful and accurate.
Can
you see it? Look at the bend in that driver shaft. It
almost looks surreal!
Mark
has applied pressure to the grip at the start of the downswing.
He is in complete control of that
club. We call this "Loading the Shaft".
And that baby is loaded as you can see below:
Mark
delivers that "load" into the ball at impact as well
as anyone. There is no slop in that swing. This accounts
for his accuracy with the driver as well as the irons.
And that 280 yard driving average is nothing to sneeze at, especially
given his size relative to his PGA peers.
Now
I
couldn't do this early on...
Early
on in my career, I had fairly low swing and ball speed for
my size (over 6'). I just couldn't bend or load the shaft like
the better players. That translated into a loss of distance that
didn't
go unnoticed (or "un-teased") by my playing partners.
It
would be a few years later while designing
and testing golf balls for an industry leader that
I made an important discovery on the testing grounds.
Working
side by side with many top PGA pros (as they tested new
ball designs) afforded me a close-up view of golf balls being
launched deep down the fairways from seemingly effortless swings.
In
one of these sessions, I made a discovery that I would later
coin the "The
Key To A Repeating Golf Swing" and
it completely changed my game.
Most
importantly, The Key automatically loaded my golf club
shaft at the top of the swing, so I could deliver all
that energy back through the ball at impact. It was
an awesome feeling, and the sound of impact finally mimicked
the players on TV (that snap and fizz of a crisply struck ball).
You
see, to get the club from the top of the back swing down to impact,
there are a few things that must happen in a fraction of a second,
and they are not intuitive.
Hence,
the
down swing is a totally Different Animal than the back
swing!
The
forces created are tremendous, even for the senior or slower
swing speed player. Different muscles are engaged and dynamic
balance must be maintained by calling on specific parts of the
body. And it all takes place in less than 1/3 second!
From
his solid position at the top (image to the right), Mark (and
You) can initiate the down swing with The
